History

It is located on the south bank of the Akui River, a clear stream. Dainichiji Temple is located in the same precincts as Ichinomiya Shrine, which was the general guardian of Awa, and was originally worshiped as a temple.

In 815 (6th year of Konin), when Kobo Daishi was performing the Goma ritual at Daishigamori on the opposite bank, Dainichi Nyorai descended with purple clouds. “This land is a sacred place. If you have faith, you should build a temple." Kobo Daishi, who was told so, carved a statue of Dainichi Nyorai and built a hall as the principal image. The origin of the temple name also comes from here.

From 1573 to 1592, the building was completely destroyed in the Battle of Tensho. Later, in the early Edo period, the main hall was rebuilt by Mitsutaka Hachisuka, the lord of the Awa domain.

In 1868 (Keio 4), it was divided into a shrine and a temple by the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism.The eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva of Ichinomiya Shrine, which is said to have been carved by Gyoki, became the principal image of worship. And the statue of Dainichi Nyorai became a side samurai.

We also recommend visiting Ichinomiya Shrine, which stands on the other side of the prefectural road. The front shrine is designated as an important cultural property of Japan, and the mountain behind it is the remains of Ichinomiya Castle, which was built during the period of the Northern and Southern Courts.
