History
In each prefecture of the Shikoku 88 Sacred Sites, there is a sekisho-ji temple, where pilgrims with wicked intentions cannot proceed after being judged by Daishi. This is the checkpoint of Awa, and it is also called “the total checkpoint of Shikoku" as the main training hall of Shikoku’s 88 temples.
It was built as an imperial temple of Emperor Shomu, and was founded by Gyoki to pray for the safe delivery of Empress Komyo. A 1.8-inch (about 5.5 cm) gold Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva (Koyasu no Jizo-san) is enshrined as the principal image of Buddha.
After that, Kobo Daishi appeared and worried that the too small principal image would be lost to future generations, so he carved a 6-shaku (about 1.9m) Enmei Jizo statue and placed a gold Jizo in the womb. It was during this period that the name of the temple was changed to 'Tatsueji’. At that time, it was located in a scenic spot near the mountains about 400m west of the current location.
Although it received a devastating blow in the Tensho War, the principal image was able to escape the disaster safely. It was rebuilt in its current location under the patronage of Iemasa Hachisuka, the first lord of Awa.
