History
It is said that Gyoki founded the temple at the request of Emperor Shomu.
In 815 (Konin 6), when Kobo Daishi was 42 years old, he carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai to ward off evil not only for himself but also for the people of the world.
It prospered as a temple to pray for warding off evil under the protection of three emperors, Heizei, Saga, and Junna.
It is said that when a fire broke out in 1188 (Bunji 4), the principal image flew away while emitting light and took refuge in Mt. Tamazushi in Okunoin.
Later, when the temple was rebuilt and a new Yakushi Nyorai statue was made the principal image, there are two principal images because the original principal image flew back from Okunoin. One of them is called “Reverse Yakushi" and is worshiped from the back side of the main hall.
Highlight
【Yugi Pagoda】Built in 1963. Rokaku with a height of 29m.
The Yugi Pagoda is a scripture of the Shingon sect. It is a tangible manifestation of doctrine,
“Everything in the world is made up of two opposing things. By uniting these things, the foundation of peace and happiness in the world is preached. Heaven and earth merge and all things become rich…"
Based on the teachings of the “Yugi Sutra," which preaches the harmony of heaven and earth, five pillars representing the wisdom of Kongo stand on the roof.
Eight pillars, representing the theory of the womb, are erected around the perimeter, and the upper part is square, and the lower part is a cylindrical tower, which is a single story.
【Yakuzaka】The stone steps leading to the main hall consist of 33 steps for Onnayakuzaka and 42 steps for Otokoyakuzaka. Furthermore, there is a 61-step kanreki-yakuzaka slope from the main hall to the Yugito tower.
It is about 75 km (about 2 hours by car) to the next 24th temple, “Hotsumisakiji"!
