Umemi Jizo of Zenrakuji Temple is said to have a miraculous effect on diseases and troubles from the neck up, such as brain diseases, neurosis, prayers for passing exams, prevention of blurring, and chronic diseases such as eyes, nose, and ears.The rare Jizo statue is popular with worshipers.

History

It is said that Kobo Daishi visited this area between 806 and 810 and built it as a separate temple for Takakamo Shrine (currently Tosa Ichinomiya Shrine) in Ichinomiya, Tosa Province.

Kobo Daishi, who felt the spiritual power of this place, thought that if there are 100 valleys, he would like to set it as a place to enter. However, since it was Kujuku Valley, he built a temple and supplemented Ichitani and named it Mt. Dodo.

Close to Kochi Castle, it is a temple of syncretism of Shintoism and Buddhism, and prospered during the Edo period under the patronage of the Yamauchi family, the governor of the Tosa domain. Due to the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism in the early Meiji era, the temple was abandoned, but Anrakuji Temple was quickly rebuilt, so it served as a temple in place of Zenrakuji Temple, but it was restored in 1929 (Showa 4).

While Zenrakuji Temple was closed, Anrakuji Temple, which is located on the north side of Kochi Castle, was recognized as a temple. The 30th Fudasho was located in two places after that, and since it was possible to pay sutras at both temples, it was said to be the pilgrim’s lost Fudasho.

On January 1, 1994, Zenrakuji was finally designated as the 30th Fudasho, and Anrakuji was designated as its inner shrine.

Highlight

【梅見地蔵】It was built in 1816 (Bunka 13). It is said that there is a benefit for diseases from the neck up. It is said that the name “Umemi Jizo" was given because it was once enshrined under the plum tree next to Daishido.

【Koyasu Jizo】According to the legend that Kobo Daishi saved a pregnant woman from a difficult birth, there is a “Koyasu Jizo-do", and it is said that it is beneficial for difficult births and fertility prayers. A gentle-faced Jizo statue said to have been created by Kobo Daishi is enshrined here.

It is about 10 km (about 30 minutes by car) to the next 31st bill place “Chikurinji"!
