History

It is said that in 741 (Tenpyo 13), Gyoki built Ichinomiya Betto-ji Temple together with Ochi-no-Tamazumi, the provincial governor of Iyo, at the request of Emperor Shomu. At this time, Gyoki was over 70 years old.

The area is called 'Tokui no Sato’ around present-day Onoharimazuka in Matsuyama City. An eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva statue was enshrined.

When Kobo Daishi made a pilgrimage to this place in 807 (Daido 2), he consulted with Sanekatsu Ochi, who was the governor of Iyo Province at the time, and decided to move the temple to its current location as a sacred place.

According to legend, this area was hit by a drought at the time, but there is a legend that when Kobo Daishi thrust his cane into the ground, pure water immediately sprang up. The mountain name “Seiryuuzan" is also reminiscent of the legend of Kobo Daishi.

“Tsue-no-fuchi" in Okunoin, 200 meters southwest of Sairin-ji Temple, is said to be the ruins. The water has never dried up, and it flows into the inner water that flows in front of the temple, irrigating the nearby paddy fields. “Tsue-no-fuchi” was selected as one of the “Top 100 Famous Waters in Japan”.

Because the precincts are lower than the bank of the river, it is said that if a sinner passes through the gate, he will fall into Mugen Jigoku.
