History

According to the imperial request of Emperor Koken, Gyoki carved a 3 shaku (approximately 90 cm) statue of Yakushi Nyorai and erected the hall to open the temple. The name of the temple was named “Koumyoji".

After that, when Kobo Daishi made a tour of this area from 810 to 824, he changed the name of the temple to “Toji/Hantaji" and designated it as a sacred place.

In 1279 (Koan 2), by the imperial decree of the Emperor Gouda, Mongetsu Shonin held a prayer to repel the Mongol army. At this time, Michiari Kono played an active role in the Koan no eki in 1281, and later laid the foundation for becoming the governor of Iyo Province.

Ippen Shonin, a wandering monk in the Kamakura period and the founder of the Jishu sect, trained here when he returned to Iyo from Dazaifu in his youth. In his later years, in 1288, he dedicated the “Jyoudo sanbukyou," which had been owned by his late father Nyobutsu.

Hantaji has a deep connection with Sennyu-ji Temple in Kyoto, which is the family temple of the imperial family. Therefore, tiles with the crest of the 16-petaled chrysanthemum still remain. In 1395 (Oei 2), the 26th chief priest of Sennyu-ji Temple, Kaiou Osyou, became the 7th chief priest of Hantaji by order of Emperor Gokomatsu.

After that, a high priest continued to serve as the chief priest, and in the Edo period, he received the faith of the Tokugawa family. Enshrining Kangiten, one of the three statues held by the 4th shogun Ietsuna, Hantaji prospered as a large temple with 36 monasteries and over 100 branch temples. However, due to the anti-Buddhism edict of the Meiji era, the temple territory was greatly reduced.
