History
At Taizan-ji Temple, there is a secret legend of “Dosya kaji" that calms the curse of water disasters. It is a story of the era of 815 (Konin 6) when Kobo Daishi visited this place.
Kobo Daishi planted the “Fubou no pine" in this area and carved the statue of Jizo Bodhisattva as the principal image. He also built a temple and named it “Taizanji", after Mount Tai where dead spirits gather, and prayed for the rest of the dead.
After that, it became a place of imperial prayer for Emperor Junna and prospered as a large temple for a period of time, but the scale of the temple was reduced due to repeated wars. And it is said that the precincts moved to the present place where there is “Fubou no Matsu".
Hoghlight
Located on a hill in the countryside, this temple has a quiet appearance, and its beautiful stone walls and white stucco walls are also highlights.
【belfry】It was rebuilt in 1881 using old materials from the drum tower at Imabari Castle.
【jizo guruma】There is a round ring in the stone tower, and it is said that if you turn it, you can break the bond of “Rokudo Rinne". (Rokudo refers to the six labyrinths of Hell, Hungry Ghosts, Beasts, Asuras, Humans, and Heaven)
【Hubou no Pine】It is said that Kobo Daishi planted a pine tree when he founded the temple and admonished the people to “never forget the kindness of Buddha, the power of nature, and the love of people."
The current pine is said to be the third.
It is about 4 km (about 10 minutes by car) to the next 57th bill place “Eifukuji"!
