History

815 (Konin 6), Kobo Daishi built a hall in Hikinomura, where hot springs have been known since ancient times, and conveyed the benefits of hot springs, and carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai and enshrined it as the principal image. It is said that he preached the merits of healing in this hot spring to people who suffered from intractable diseases. The mountain name “Onsenzan” and the temple name “Anrakuji” are derived from this hot spring.

During the Edo period, the Tokushima clan designated it as an Ekiroji Temple, which provided lodging and meals to pilgrims and other travelers.

The temple lodging (accommodation facility) has a history of 400 years since then, and even today there is a large hot spring bath called “Anrakuji Onsen Kobo-no-Yu" that heals the fatigue of pilgrims.

The current principal image is the statue of Yakushi Nyorai, which was dedicated by a worshiper who was cured of an intractable disease, while the ancient principal image has been enshrined as a Buddha in the womb.

In 1962 (Showa 37), a woman with an intractable disease went to 88 places in Shikoku with her husband at the recommendation of the chief priest of Anrakuji Temple. Strangely enough, I was able to walk along the way, and my symptoms improved. The couple dedicated the Yakushi Nyorai statue, which is the current principal image, and the previous principal image was placed as a Buddha in the womb.
