History
It is one of the difficult spots that was once called “First Syouzan, Second Oturu, Third Tairyu." A ropeway is currently running from the foot of the mountain. It is also known as the “Mt. Kouyasan in the west" and has a tranquil atmosphere in the precincts where the huge cedar trees grow thickly.
“Akoku Tairyu no Take", which appears in the preface of Kobo Daishi’s book “Sango Shiiki", is said to be this land.
When Kobo Daishi was 19 years old, he practiced the Kokuzo Gumonjiho, in which he recites mantras a million times, on the rocks of Shashingatake near this temple, in order to train his memory.
In the 12th year of the Enryaku era, a pagoda was built by the imperial request of Emperor Kanmu, and it is said that Kobo Daishi created and enshrined various statues, including the principal image of Buddha, Kokuzo Bosatsu.
The name of the mountain is Shashinzan “after the trainig ground Shashindake, and the name of the temple isTairyuji" after the great dragon (dragon god) that protected Kobo Daishi during his training.
It was deeply worshiped by the imperial family and samurai families, and in the late Heian period, it prospered with 12 subsidiary temples. However, it has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt due to the Battle of Tensho and other fires. The Niomon Gate was built in the Kamakura period, and the other buildings were rebuilt after the Edo period.
