History
When Kobo Daishi visited this place, golden Sanskrit letters appeared from five-colored clouds in the sky, and from there appeared Yakushi Nyorai. Light shone in all directions, and when Kobo Daishi dug the ground with his cane to find water to use for kaji (kaji), milky white water sprang up.
After purifying himself with the sacred water, Kobo Daishi made a vow to “Equally heal all people’s mental and physical ailments" and carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai and enshrined it as the principal image of worship. The name of the mountain was set to “Hakusuisan", and the name of the temple was named “Byodo-ji Temple" with the hope that people would be saved equally.
In 1680, it was rebuilt by Iyo’s Ajari and others.
Byodo-ji Temple used to have a large tsuyado. Tsuyado is a temple facility where worshipers can stay overnight, and it accepted all kinds of people without discrimination.
There are two stone steps leading to the main hall, Otoko-zaka and Onna-zaka, and many worshipers leave a coin equal to their age to ward off evil and climb the stairs. In front of Otokozaka, the sacred water associated with Kobo Daishi still springs up, and it is revered as a sacred water that cures all kinds of illnesses.

【Spiritual Water “Water of Kobo"】You can also take it home. The container can be purchased for 200 yen. It is colorless and transparent, suitable for drinking, and is said to be effective against all kinds of diseases.
【箱車】Three box carts are dedicated to the main temple. It was once used by a pilgrim with bad legs who visited the shrine, and it is said that he became able to walk here. It was dedicated at Byodo-ji Temple as a token of gratitude for the miraculous healing of the foot.
【main temple building】In 1737 it was rebuilt. It is famous for its colorful ceiling paintings of flowers.
Because five-colored clouds fluttered, five-colored curtains are displayed in various places.
