History

Currently, to go to Syouryuuji, you cross the “Usa-no Bridge" which opened in 1973 (Showa 48). However, in the days when there were no bridges, the mouth of Uranouchi Bay was crossed by boat for about 400 meters. Kobo Daishi also crossed this bay by boat when building Syouryuuji.

Kobo Daishi left eight attendants there, and it is said that their descendants have been protecting the ferry boat called “Ryu no Watashi" for generations until recent years.

Kobo Daishi, who went to Tang Dynasty, learned the secrets of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism from Keika Osho at the Syouryuuji in Chang’an, and became the eighth founder of Shingon.

Kobo Daishi wished to build a temple in Japan in order to repay his teacher’s kindness, and threw a Tokkosho into the eastern sky so that a related place would be chosen. It is said that Tokkosho flew away high in the sky, enveloped in purple clouds.

When Kobo Daishi returned to Japan and traveled around Shikoku, he felt that Tokkosho, which had been thrown from Tang, was in this area. In 815 (Konin 6), a hall was built in that place and a stone statue of Fudo Myo-o was enshrined. The mountain name is “Mt. Tokkosho" from the Tokkosho from a foreign land, and the temple name is “Syouryuuji" in memory of my former teacher.

Until around the Meiji era, Syouryuuji was one of the “7 Great Temples of Tosa" with four branch temples and six side temples. The principal image of worship is Namikiri Fudo Myo-o, which is said to have appeared when Kobo Daishi prayed to calm the storm when he entered the Tang Dynasty. It is widely believed that not only the safety of the sea and a good catch, but also the turbulence of the world can be calmed down.
