History
It is said to have originated when Morioki Ochi, the governor of Iyo Province at the time, built a hall near the summit of Mt. Sakurei at the request of Emperor Tenji. It is said that the statue of Thousand Armed Kannon Bodhisattva, the principal image of Buddha, was carved for the emperor by a dragon woman who came up from the sea.
It is said that a monk named Abō Sennin once shut himself up in the temple for 40 years, and after refurbishing the monastery, he suddenly disappeared in 718 (Yoro 2). The name of the temple is derived from this Abo hermit.
Kobo Daishi dug a well to relieve people suffering from illness when he practiced in this area when the Shikoku Sacred Site was opened, and restored and revived the Shichido Garan, which had been in ruins. This well still exists today, and is said to have saved many people from various illnesses.
During the Edo period, it was in ruins with only the main hall and 12 shrines, but in the early Meiji period, Yuren Shonin became the owner of the mountain and worked with many followers to restore it to the present day.
