歴史

The whole mountain was destroyed by the fire of Tensho.

In 815 (Konin 6), when Kobo Daishi was 42 years old, he carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai and built a temple to ward off misfortune and pray for the well-being of sentient beings. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and surrounded by pure mountain streams, Kobo Daishi was fascinated by this place, and built a gomadan on Hachijoiwa Rock, about 200 meters higher, and conducted a 17-day training. It is said that after that, five-colored wisteria were planted in front of the pagoda, hence the name Fujiidera.

It prospered as a training hall for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism and was at its peak of prosperity as a magnificent temple with seven halls, but from 1573 to 1592, the entire mountain was destroyed by fire and declined.

In 1674 (2nd year of Enpo), the first half of the Edo period, the sect was changed to the Rinzai sect by Nanzan Kokushi of the Rinzai sect to which the lord of the Awa domain had devoted himself. A fire occurred in 1832 (Tenpo 3), and all but the principal image were destroyed. The current temple was rebuilt in 1860.

The principal image has miraculously escaped fire many times.

There is a theory that the Yakushi Nyorai statue, which is the principal image of Buddha, is an important designated cultural property of Japan and is the oldest Buddha statue in the 88 temples. In addition, because it has escaped warfare and numerous fires, it is worshiped as a medicine doctor to ward off evil.

【Pilgrimage Korogasi】To get to the next temple, Syousan-ji Temple, you have to walk about 13 km along a narrow and steep mountain road.

It is a difficult place that takes about 9 hours on a woman’s foot.

The ruins, stone Buddha statues, and stone markers that Kobo Daishi touched during his training still remain.

It’s about 43km (about an hour and a half by car) to the next 12th bill place, Syousanji!
