History
741 (Tenpyo 13), It is an ancient temple that is said to have been built as an imperial Petition Dojo when Emperor Shomu issued an edict to build a provincial temple. It was built in a location that is believed to have been the center of the former Awa Province.
816 (Konin 7), Kobo Daishi stayed here and The statue of Senju Kannon, the principal image of Buddha, the statue of Bishamonten, who protects the nation as a side attendant, and the statue of Fudo Myoo, who surrenders the devil, are carved and enshrined. It was during this period that the name of the temple was decided.
It was destroyed by fire during the Tensho War, but in 1659 (Manji 2), the Hachisuka family, the feudal lord, rebuilt it at the request of the chief priest, Yuuo Hoshi, and it is the current building.
