History
At the request of Emperor Shomu, Gyoki opened the temple and carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai as the principal image. At that time, it was a dojo where women were not allowed to save people from disasters and epidemics, and it was called “Dainichizan Fukusyouin Mitsugonji". Women were not allowed to enter the top of Hanaorizaka, which descends toward Tatsueji Temple, the 19th temple.
From 782 to 806, when Kobo Daishi stayed and practiced, Tamayori Gozen, the mother of Kobo Daishi, visited the mountain, but she was not allowed to enter the mountain because women were not allowed to enter. There, Kobo Daishi was struck by a waterfall for seven days, mastered the secret method of lifting the ban on women, and welcomed his mother.
Tamayori Gozen shaved his hair and dedicated his hair, so Kobo Daishi changed the name of the temple to 'Boyouzan Onzanji.’ He carved a self-portrait of himself and enshrined it, and vowed to continue wishing for the happiness of people, saying, “My wish is to remove the misfortunes of the people of the world."
Although it was destroyed by fire during the Tensho War, it was rebuilt and prospered under the patronage of the Awa feudal lord during the Edo period.
