【Japan tourism】Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage trip [No.2] Nisshozan Muryōjuin Gokuraku-ji
When you enter through the vermilion-lacquered Niomon Gate, you will be greeted by a beautiful garden reminiscent of the Pure Land. There is a main hall in front of you after climbing about 40 stone steps, and there is a statue of Daishi, also known as Yasusan Daishi, in the back on the right.
The 1,200-year-old Chomei cedar tree, which is said to have been hand-planted by Kobo Daishi, is a sacred tree that is said to grant peace of mind, recovery from illness, and longevity by touching it.

history
In 815 (6th year of Konin), when Kobo Daishi was 42 years old, he recited the Amida Sutra for 37 days in this area and practiced it. Then, Amida Nyorai appeared on the day of the final wish. It is said that Kobo Daishi engraved the figure and enshrined it as the principal image of worship.
This principal image has a beautiful dignity, and since the miraculous light reaches off the coast of Nagahara in the Kii Channel and interferes with fishing, a small mountain was built in front of the main hall to block the light. From this, the name of the temple was named “Nissho-ji".
From 1573 to 1592, it was destroyed by fire during the invasion of Awa by Chosokabe Motochika of Tosa.In 1659 (Manji 2), Mitsutaka Hachisuka, the lord of the Tokushima domain, rebuilt the main hall.
