History
At the request of Emperor Shomu, Gyoki built a pagoda and named it Kongomyoji. The principal image is a 91cm-high Shaka Nyorai statue, and it was founded with three statues of Amida Nyorai and Yakushi Nyorai as attendants.
During the Konin era (810-824), Kobo Ambassador dug a well in this area when he saw villagers suffering from drought during his tour of Shikoku. As a result, the temple name was changed to the current “Konsenji” because of the spiritual water that sprung up. The water from that well still springs up today and is called “Koganei water" and is said to have miraculous effects on longevity.
After that, when Pope Kameyama, who had a strong faith in Kobo Daishi, stayed, he built a hall modeled after Kyoto’s Sanjusangendo (Rengeo-in) and enshrined a thousand statues of Senju Kannon. Furthermore, the mountain in the back was named Kameyama, and the name of the mountain was Kikouzan. Since then, it has had a deep connection with the imperial family, and the mausoleum of Emperor Chokei is also located behind the main hall.
According to the Genpei Seisuiki, in 1185 (the second year of Genryaku), during the Genpei War, Minamoto no Yoshitsune stopped by on his way to Yashima and prayed for victory.
During the Edo period, it was bustling with many learned monks.
