History

This temple is said to have been built a long time ago, around the time of Emperor Yomei at the end of the 6th century. During the reign of the previous emperor, Emperor Bidatsu, many Buddhist craftsmen came from Baekje to build Shitennoji Temple in Osaka.

On the way back to Japan after the completion of Shitennoji Temple, he was caught in a storm off the coast of Tosa and evacuated to the port of Akiyama, which is close to Mt. Buddhist craftsmen carved a statue of Yakushi Nyorai to pray for safe voyages. And it is said that the origin of this temple is that the Yakushi Nyorai statue was enshrined on the summit of Mt. Motoo.

More than 200 years later, from 810 to 824, Kobo Daishi visited the temple and built a hall with the statue of Yakushi Nyorai as its principal image. At that time, seeds of five grains brought back from Tang (rice, barley, millet, millet, beans, or barnyard millet) were sown in the precincts, so it is said that the name of the temple was changed to Tanemaji.

947-957 During the middle of the Heian period, Emperor Murakami bestowed an imperial plaque of “Tanema". The protection of the Tosa clan governor was also strong, and the temple was also repaired.

Highlight

【Chozubachi】It is a tangible cultural property designated by Kochi City. It is clearly written that it was built in 1677 (5th year of Enpō), making it the oldest in the Haruno area.

It is located in front of the main hall and has a diameter of about 55 cm. The part that stores water on the top surface is a regular hexagon with one side of 19 cm. The depth is about 12cm.

【Child care Kannon】Kannon holds a baby to pray for the prosperity of descendants and safe delivery. In order to facilitate childbirth, temples remove the bottom of a ladle, pray for two nights and three days of safe childbirth, and give it to pregnant women along with amulets.

Pregnant women display it in the alcove, and if the baby is safely delivered, the ladle is offered to the temple.

It is about 12 km (about 40 minutes by car) to the next 35th bill place “Kiyotaki-ji"!
