History
In 815 (6th year of Konin), Kobo Daishi stayed here for a long time to train during his tour of Shikoku. At that time, he felt and realized Dainichi Nyorai, so he bowed three times with one sword and carved a statue of Dainichi Nyorai that was 1.8 inches long. With this as the principal image, the name of the temple was named “Dainichi-ji".
Although it was in decline for a while, in the Edo period, the temple was repaired by the Hachisuka family, the feudal lord of the Tokushima domain, who protected Dainichi Nyorai as its principal object of worship.
In the past, there was a building called “Tsuyado” where Buddhist ceremonies were held all night long, and it is known that generations of chief priests would let sick pilgrims stay overnight and warmly entertain them.
In the corridor that connects the main hall and the Daishido hall, the Kannon statues of the thirty-three temples of Saigoku are enshrined.
It was built around 1790 (Kansei 2nd year) with donations from believers from all over western Japan.Restoration was carried out at the end of the Heisei era.
