History
It is said that in 720 ( Yoro 4), Gyoki, at the imperial request of Emperor Kanmu, carved a statue of Fudo Myo-o, an incarnation of Dainichi Nyorai, and established it as the principal image of worship.
From 810 to 824, under the imperial order of Emperor Saga, Kobo Daishi rebuilt the temple as a central training hall for faith and learning, and named it “Fudoin Enmyoji" as an imperial prayer hall. However, since the name of the temple is the same as the 53rd Fudasho, it is inconvenient, so it was renamed to “Enmeiji" after the Meiji era.
Since then, it has been destroyed by repeated fires, but has been rebuilt each time. In 1727 ( Kyoho 12), it was moved to the current Chikami foothills along with the principal image.
Highlight
The temple has the second oldest signpost of Shinnen in Shikoku.
【Hifuse Fudoson】 It is the principal image of Buddha and is a rare statue of Fudo Myo-o wearing the coronet crown of Dainichi Nyorai.
The name comes from the fact that it has escaped fires many times.
It is about 4 km (about 15 minutes by car) to the next 55th bill place “Nankobo"!
