Sankaku-ji Temple is the last sacred place in Iyo and is famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot on the hillside of Mt. Hiraishi at an altitude of about 360m. The temple is visited not only by those who wish for a safe delivery, but also by those who wish for a child.

History

It is said that Gyoki founded the temple in order to embody the Pure Land of Miroku at the request of Emperor Shomu.

In 815 (Konin 6), Kobo Daishi visited and enshrined the eleven-faced Kannon and Fudo Myo-o statues. Then, a triangular Goma altar was built, and for 21 days, he prayed for the security of the nation and the welfare of all people, and is said to have practiced the secret method of surrender Goma.

Triangle Temple is the only temple where Kobo Daishi practiced this secret method. The remains of this gomadan still exist as the island in the center of the “Triangle Pond," which is the origin of the name of the temple.

Part of the hall was destroyed by fire during the Tensho War. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1849 (Kaei 2) and repaired in 1971.

The principal image has been worshiped since ancient times as “Kannon of good luck and warding off evil" and “Kannon of easy childbirth".

There is a legend that couples who are not blessed with a child will receive a “kodakara syakushi" at Sankakuji Temple, and if they eat together, they will be blessed with a child. After giving birth to a child, it is customary to hold the new Shakushi and the given Syakushi to pay your respects.
