Jinnein and the 69th temple, Kannonji, are located halfway up Mt. Kotohiki in Kotohiki Park. It is one temple and two Fudasho, which is rare even among the Shikoku sacred sites. The names of the two temples are also engraved on the Niomon, making them two temples in the same precincts.

History

In 703 (Taiho 3), Nissho Shonin, a high priest of the Hosso sect of Buddhism, received a prophecy from Usa Hachimangu Shrine while training here, and discovered a sacred ship and a koto on the distant sea. He pulled it up to Mt. Kotohiki and built the 'Kotohiki Hachimangu Shrine’ to worship it.

It is said to have originated from Jingu-ji Temple, which was built at this time as a separate temple for Kotohiki Hachimangu Shrine. The sango “shippo” refers to the seven kinds of treasures.

In 807 ( Daido 2), Kobo Daishi enshrined Amida Nyorai, the main Buddha of Kotohiki Hachimangu Shrine, and later designated it as the 68th sacred place of Shikoku under the name of “Jinnein".

Kotohiki Hachimangu Shrine was separated into 'Kotohiki Shrine’ and 'Jinnein’ by the Meiji Restoration’s separation of Shintoism and Buddhism, and Jinnein was relocated to the grounds of Kannonji at the foot of the mountain. At the same time, the statue of Amida Nyorai enshrined at Kotohiki Hachimangu Shrine was moved to the Saikon-do Hall. The West Golden Hall is the main hall, and the statue of Amida Nyorai is the principal object of worship.
