History
Gokenzan (altitude 375m), which can be climbed by cable car, has a mysterious ridgeline that looks as if a sword has been pushed up.
In 829 (Tencho 6), when Kobo Daishi climbed this mountain, five swords fell from the sky, and the mountain’s guardian, Kuraou Gongen, appeared. Then Kuraou Gongen said, “This mountain is a sacred place suitable for Buddhism."Kobo Daishi buried these swords in the mountains and named them Mt. Goken.
At that time, from the summit of Mt. Goken, you could see Sanuki, Awa, and Bizen. That is why it was called “Yakuniji".
The origin of Yakuri-ji is that Kobo Daishi planted eight roasted chestnuts before going to Tang Dynasty to make his prayers for Buddhist training come true and to predict success or failure.
There is a legend that Kobo Daishi’s wish was fulfilled because all eight roasted chestnuts sprouted. Taking this opportunity, the name was changed to “Yakuriji".
It was destroyed by fire during the Tensho War, but was rebuilt in the Edo period by the feudal lord of Takamatsu, Matsudaira Yorishige.
Five peaks of Mt. Goken stood up like a sword, but one peak collapsed from the middle of the mountain in the great earthquake of 1704 (Hoei 4).
Highlight
【syoutendo】From the Tofukumon-in Temple of Emperor Gomizunoo, Kangiten is enshrined, which was given to the Ikuu Shonin.
It is said to bring blessings for prosperous business, academic success, and matchmaking, and is known as “Yakuri no Syouten-san."
【Chujobo-do】It enshrines ascetic practitioners with supernatural powers as tengu.
Chujobo is one of Sanuki’s Three Great Tengu. A tengu that comes down from the mountains at night and returns to the mountains in the morning to fulfill people’s wishes.
It will dedicate my clogs to the side of Chujobo-do. It is said that if the clogs are dirty the next day, it is a sign that the Chujobo worked hard.
It is about 7 km (about 15 minutes by car) to the next temple, 86th temple “Shidoji"!
