History
In 741 (Tenpyo 13), it is one of the provincial temples that were built in various countries by Emperor Shomu’s edict to pray for the protection of the nation by Buddhism.
It is said that the statue of Shaka Nyorai and Daihannya Sutra were enshrined by Emperor Shomu, and the mortuary tablet of Empress Komyo was dedicated to the main hall.
Gyoki opened and made Yakushi Nyorai statue as the principal image. At the time of its founding, it was a Hosso sect belonging to the school of Nanto. The temple territory was large, and a magnificent temple was built.
From 810 to 824, Kobo Daishi changed his sect from the Hosso sect to the Shingon sect when he made a pilgrimage to open the sacred sites of Shikoku.
Temporarily weakened by the Battle of Tensho. However, in 1741, the temple was rebuilt under the order of Kakugoro Hayami, the magistrate of the Awa domain. It is now a Soto sect temple.
