History
From 729 to 749, it was founded by Gyoki under the imperial order of Emperor Shomu.Gyoki preached Buddhism while visiting various places and he built many temples, reservoirs, bridges, and fuseya (lodgings for travelers).A high priest who worked hard to build the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple and became the first Daisojo.
In 815 (Konin 6), Kobo Daishi, who visited Shikoku to open a sacred place, saw the monks surrounding an old monk preaching at this temple and listening intently. It seems that he remembered the scene of Mt. Ryoju in Tenjiku, where Buddha preached.
Then, it was named “Jikuwazan Raizanji" in the sense of transferring the sacred mountain of Tenjiku (India) to Japan (Japan), and the Shaka Nyorai was carved and enshrined as the principal object of worship.
He designated the sacred mountain temple as the first temple of the sacred grounds and prayed for the establishment and fulfillment of the sacred grounds in Shikoku. As one of the three great temples of Awa, it prospered as a place where monks gathered and practiced.
The 14-centimeter-tall bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha enshrined in front of the principal image was made in the Hakuho era and is said to have been the Buddha statue held by Kobo Daishi.
In 1582 (Tensho 10), the temple was destroyed by fire when Chosokabe Motochika of Tosa invaded Awa. But in the Edo period, Mitsutaka Hachisuka, the third lord of the Tokushima Domain, revived the area.
In 1891 (Meiji 24), the hall except for the main hall and Tahoto was destroyed by fire again. After that, efforts to restore the temple have made it a beautiful temple.
